Chords
Now return to music. If you are composing in the key of C, the basic word in your harmonic vocabulary is the chord of C (C, E, G in various spacings) :

This chord is what we end on, and it is the base from which all our operations are directed, so we may perhaps designate it as "home".
If we then add one further chord to our harmonic vocabulary, the next in importance is the chord of G (G, B, D) with its 'root' or foundation tone on G, the 5th degree of the scale of C. This chord of G leads naturally up to our 'home' chord of C, so that if we put the two together:
